How Hugging Face’s Early Investor Spots Winners
The Takeaway: In an era of AI-accelerated coding, the ability to rapidly generate product insights and iterate has become exponentially more valuable than pure technical building skills alone.
Matt Hartman, founder and managing partner of Factorial Capital, wrote the first check into Hugging Face while at Betaworks. The company began as a teenage chatbot, confronted poor retention honestly, and after the Transformers paper pivoted hard into open source—becoming the “GitHub for AI.” Hartman’s philosophy is to hunt for what is newly technically possible and to back technical founders whose “pivot foot” is technology rather than a vertical market, giving them freedom to move with the world.
He structured Factorial as a solo GP with a network of deep technical venture partners (including Hugging Face CEO Clem), creating a referral flywheel. He notes: “The ability to synthesize how a user is using your product and then to improve it, I think, has got to be exponentially more value.” He himself vibe-coded Ghost Pepper, a local voice-to-text tool using Claude and the Superpowers skill; it hit #1 on Hacker News and was open-sourced. Current theses include developer-tool maintenance layers, frontier non-language models in robotics and science, and fullstack AI-native applications that go deep in the stack.

Venture Investing Is Deceptively Simple—Few Do All of It
FPV Ventures partner Nikunj Kothari argues venture investing is deceptively simple. Truly great VCs must do all four things at once: win the right to invest, find and back exceptional founders, do so just before consensus, and execute consistently every year. The vast majority manage only one or a few. Consistency is the least discussed and hardest part—regardless of track record, wealth, or current TVPI, the next opportunity may go elsewhere if you do not want it enough. The feedback loop is long, but mindset and approach eventually catch up.
